At certain times of the year, dust is a real headache for those who work with leather. Not to mention the problem of static electricity, which sometimes makes it impossible to work at all.

BERGI SpA has long been committed to this cause, waging a full-scale war against dust.

There are various types of powder used in tanneries: emery dust, which is the most common, flesh-side fibre dust, and ambient dust.

Typically, when purchasing a grinding and dust removal line, secondary factors such as the type of blower, the distance between the machines and the suction system, the diameter of the suction pipes, how many bends, the difference in height, etc. are underestimated. These are all factors determined for successful skin cleaning. So when you buy a grinding line or a single dust collector it is good to know from the beginning where the machine will be placed and where the suction system is located. It is clear that the closer they are the easier the dimensional calculation. On the other hand, if you plan to install a spark detection system in the intake air pipes, you need to calculate the air velocity and place an automatic damper at a safe distance from the detector to block the air flow and prevent the spark from entering the dust collector. This distance is always greater than 20 linear meters.

To deal with the fibre dust on the flesh side that is usually generated by rubbing, BERGI SpA has designed a range of dust extractors that can be positioned, or even installed, in front of or behind various production machines, such as: behind the stacking conveyor before stacking, in front of the spray finishing line, a rotary pad printing machine, or a press for finishing or intermediate printing. Fixed or mobile dust collectors, depending on the customer’s specific requirements on a case-by-case basis.

For environmental dust, the solution is usually the same as just mentioned above: this is normally created by incorrect use of certain processing steps, such as for example personnel who introduce the hides onto a finishing line or press to iron and print and with the jet of compressed air constantly blows the hides, by moving the dust from the skin in his hand but moving it to another part of the environment and then systematically returning to the starting point.

There are also specific systems for air recirculation in the environment with collection filters and low-energy impact engines.

All this must be treated after careful on-site advice so as not to risk a half-baked investment.

Bergi’s Attiva 3200 belt grinder is the latest-generation belt model for whole hides. Given the excellent results, in terms of finished product quality, obtained with the size 1800, the Bergi team decided to make the size 3200 to complete the range of belt grinders. As with the size 1800, this machine can boast a wide opening of both the upper protective casing and the leather introduction system; these two features facilitate machine maintenance and cleaning operations, making them safer and faster.

Very encouraging are the productivity and quality data surveyed and collected from user customers, who once they have found the right “recipe” for their processing confirm improvements in at least one of the two points. For example, some data show that for the same amount of leather processed, the Attiva 3200 model allows the same end result to be obtained with just one pass instead of the two made with a traditional model. Other data collected confirm the greater durability of the buffing paper with which a much higher number of skins can be processed than with a traditional model, in some cases even more than twice as many skins.

Another strong point, which is fundamental for a top-quality finished product, is the complete absence of vibrations when working. Attiva 3200 has also been used to process nubuck articles, obtaining excellent results as confirmation of its high-quality construction. Attiva 3200 is strongly recommended for articles that are more sensitive to sudden changes in temperature, as having the possibility of working at lower revs, compared to a traditional roller model, a more stable temperature is maintained in the working area, thanks also to the paper that dissipates more heat.

When analysing the belt working mode, it can be seen that, compared to the conventional buffing roller, the belt, due to its larger surface area, removes more material and discharges dust better, thus keeping it cleaner. A further advantage is that with the belt, the use of glue and base paper is no longer necessary, thus generating less waste over time.

A “hidden” feature of the Attiva 3200 is the patented automatic paper change release system; this optional accessory provides for the automatic release of the “cantilever” by means of a hydraulic system, thus eliminating the use of the compressed air gun. This accessory further facilitates paper change operations and reduces the possibility of paper snagging during insertion as the mechanical elements used in manual paper changing are removed.

The Starlux SV is a special ironing and/or embossing machine recently added to Bergi S.p.A.’s wide range of machinery.

It is equipped with the well-established automatic roller changing system with the “revolver” device, but the real feature that makes it unique is the built-in “Vario” system, which allows you to vary the geometry of the machine.

The ‘Vario’ system allows you to change the angle of contact between the leather and the operative roller and, depending on the angle chosen, the leather can remain in contact with the roller for less or more time. Depending on the time for which the leather remains in contact with the operative roller, different results will be obtained, for example, a longer contact time allows a more homogeneous ironing while keeping the leather soft, all while decreasing the working pressure.

This machine, thanks to the combination of its special functions with the ‘Vario’ system, lends itself very well in terms of versatility.

Leaving aside for a moment the applications of the ‘Vario’ system, this machine has the possibility of ironing leathers both by pressure and thickness. Thickness ironing is done thanks to the motorised operating roller that follows the direction of the leather, making the process much gentler; in this way, soft leathers are not compacted while maintaining their characteristics intact and, more generally, thickness ironing allows only the surface of the leather to be stressed.

In 2025, our company will reach the great milestone of 60 years in business and to keep it up to date we try to renew and improve it constantly.

We have recently completed the expansion of our Arzignano office so that we can work more comfortably and safely in a well-equipped environment, but we haven’t stopped there.

At our Arzignano factory, in addition to the expansion, we have invested around €500,000 to reduce our environmental impact. Work was carried out on: lighting, windows and doors, heating, and rainwater harvesting. In particular, we have replaced all the gas boilers with heat pumps and installed two water collection tanks, one for the fire-fighting system and the other for high-pressure washing of parts and machinery.

We subsequently invested further in the installation of a solar power system, which was recently inaugurated and will meet around 90% of our energy needs.

At the Gambellara plant, we have eliminated the use of coal for forging, interventions have been carried out to improve the electrical system, and the smoke extraction system has been redesigned. Most recently, we have purchased a latest-generation machine tool to enable us to be even more self-sufficient in the production of our components.

There have been many changes over the last three years, but we are convinced that this is the only way to secure the company’s future whilst reducing its environmental impact.

We won’t stop here; our next objectives are to install a solar panel system in Gambellara as well and to obtain ISO 14001 certification, which will help us manage the process of reducing emissions as effectively as possible.

Armless: Compact Stacker for Finishing

Special compact-type stacker with split movable conveyor.

The stacker BERTECH model ARMLESS is the machine specifically developed to meet the needs of the finishing plant where in the same line both full hides and sides are processed.

This stacker is also useful for those tanneries that process small size leathers such as croupons, shoulders, sheep & goat skins on large machines (such as spray lines or ironing machines) and deposit the leathers on two stacks.
The name of the ARMLESS derives from the fact that this stacker is without arms since it is made of two movable, independent and self-standing conveyors that, when necessary, can work as a single one. The Fold & Load is a bundle making machine, that is to say a machine designed to fold the finished leathers into a bundle and load it automatically onto a pallet.
Normally this machine is positioned underneath a stacker Bertech Soft or Dynamic that is, in its turn, positioned after a through-feed ironing machine or a measuring machine. The synchronization with the stacker allows to accumulate one or more leathers on the two conveyors positioned on the upper part of the Fold & Load with grain up or grain down or mixed. Once the selected number of leathers has been reached, the machine folds them. In the lower part of the machine other conveyors complete the bundle.

Fold & Go: Deck Preparer for Finished Skins

Bundle making.

The Fold & Go is a bundle making machine, that is to say a machine designed to fold the finished leathers into a bundle. Normally this machine is positioned underneath a stacker. Bertech Soft or Dynamic that is, in its turn, positioned after a through-feed ironing machine or a measuring machine. The synchronization with the stacker allows to accumulate one or more leathers on the two conveyors positioned on the upper part of the Fold & Go with grain up or grain down or mixed. Once the selected number of leathers has been reached, the machine folds them. In the lower part of the machine other conveyors complete the bundle.

According to the exigences it is possible to fold the leather in 2/4 or 8 folds.

Once the leathers are folded, the bundle is transported outside from the working area of the machine by a band conveyor. Until FoldGo prepares the bundle, this conveyor can be used as a bench to complete the labelling and binding of the bundle thanks to its ergonomic position.

The SELECTOR is a line of leather selection machines that varies from the wet blue to the finished articles.

In the wet blue section, it can be supplied together with a wet blue press with the operator doing the selection positioned before the wet blue press SELECTOR FRONT INSPECT or after the wet blue press SELECTOR OVER INSPECT or for the selection of the splits with the possibility to install the cutting machine to cut the shoulder or the platforms for euro-pallets.

Pegasus: Leather Stretcher for Easel

Leather spreader on horse

PEGASUS is a machine to be positioned under the stacker COMPACT 34XL.

Its function is to collect the leathers deposited by the stacker (one or more leathers at a time) and spread them onto the horse.

It can work in both longitudinal and transversal directions when the leathers are fed from the side. When working with pallet or table the PEGASUS can be folded and positioned aside. It is equipped with wheels and when folded, it occupies the space of a horse.

The PEGASUS has been granted a patent for invention.

Synchrocoat Machine for Applying Effects to Leather

The SYNCHROCOAT is a machine for applying “thousand-dot” effects and designs on large whole hides. Unlike the competition, the SYNCHROCOAT is only manufactured with a winch-type roller change. This very important choice was made because this system allows the transmission motor to be connected to the operator roller via two gears with front teeth, which eliminates any play between the parts. Through-feed press for ironing and embossing with automatic revolver-type roller changing device

Rotary press for continuous ironing, satin finishing and embossing. It has an automatic roller changing system with revolver device and an independent heating unit for each roller. It can store up to 3 large diameter operative rollers.

The Starlux can be supplied in a single version, double one or all three together.

The Starlux has the automatic roller changing system. Changing the rollers is very easy and fast. Each roller has its own thermal-oil heating unit for the independent management of the working temperatures. This system permits to change the operative roller many times a day without losses of time.

The operative rollers have an internal oil distribution system unique in its genre and the maximum difference of temperature all along the surface of the roller is one degree (1°C).

The Starlux can be supplied with one roller and the other two can be supplied separately thanks to the stability of the revolver roller changing system.

In conclusion the Starlux is the ideal machine to iron with pressure any kind of leather and soft leathers without compacting them, to process waxed leathers without changing their colours, to give an excellent glazing effect on the tops of the embossed leathers or to shine the tops of the milled leathers.

FINILUX TR
Special machine for the application of glossy, matte, laminated, sequined, patterned transfers to leather. The system is equipped with an accessory for protecting the felt with a reel of film. Normally a polyester film is used.

On the front part of the machine there is a transfer film unwinding device, which can be single or multiple (1, 2 or 4 reels), with a spreading roller that keeps the film well stretched. The detachment area, in the rear side, is compete with cooling device. Customized solutions are applied as required.

With the Finilux TR properly equipped, it is now possible to apply the finishing on full grain or buffed grain, by thermal transfer from polyester film or embossed release paper. If the working pressure is low and the machine is only used for finishing with release paper, a belt with siliconized surface can be used instead of using the felt protection kit.

S (600/800/1200)Buffing roller with wrapped paper and automatic paper tensioning system. This roller is supplied with an oscillator and rubber transport roller with physical characteristics and hardnesses chosen in cooperation with the customer to suit each type of processing.

PL (600/800/1200/1500/1800/2200/3000) V-shaped grooved green wool cloth polish roller. The inclined grooves guarantee a well spreading of the leather and an opening of the follicle for perfect cleaning. It is used in the intermediate stage to remove small defects and chemical impurities from the leather and is ideal for oiled and waxed leather. The green wool cloth roller can be manufactured in three different hardnesses (soft, medium, hard). The transport roller made of sandblasted and chrome-plated steel is supplied with this roller.

WW (600/800/1200/1500/1800/2200/3000)V-shaped grooved white wool cloth polish roller. The inclined grooves guarantee a well spreading of the leather and an opening of the follicle for perfect cleaning.
